Although many believe Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn is set to become the Seattle Seahawks’ next head coach, a former Coach of the Year might be flying under the radar.
ESPN’s Dan Graziano noted he was told “not to ignore the possibility” of Seattle hiring former Tennessee Titans HC Mike Vrabel, even though the Seahawks haven’t interviewed him.
Bob Condatta of The Seattle Times reported the Seahawks will interview Quinn on Thursday, Los Angeles Rams DC Raheem Morris on Friday and Carolina Panthers DC Ejiro Evero on Saturday.
The 53-year-old Quinn might have an edge over those candidates since he has deep ties to the organization. Quinn served as Seahawks DC from 2013-14, helping them win Super Bowl XLVIII.
“Quinn understands the culture and is an ideal fit,” wrote ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. “One question looms: Does relatively new owner Jody Allen seek a new spin on the Seahawks’ culture, which requires a departure from the [former HC Pete] Carroll tree?”
If the Seahawks want to go in a different direction, Vrabel — 2021 Coach of the Year — should be their top option. In six seasons with the Titans, he went 54-45 and made three playoff appearances.
More importantly, he can win without an elite QB. During his tenure in Tennessee, the organization rotated through several starters, such as Marcus Mariota, Ryan Tannehill and rookie Will Levis.
After winning 2022 Comeback Player of the Year, Seahawks QB Geno Smith backtracked slightly. He threw 20 TDs, nine picks and posted an above-average 59.7 QBR in 15 games.
Regardless, the Seahawks have a talented roster that includes stars like wide receiver DK Metcalf and rookie cornerback Devon Witherspoon. This should attract a proven HC who can help them bounce back after missing the playoffs this season.
