In “Senate committee grills social media bosses over child safety” [Feb. 1, Business], Sens. Josh Hawley and Lindsey Graham hurled righteous outrage at these CEOs: “There’s families of victims here,” Hawley said. “Would you like to apologize to them?” “You have blood on your hands,” Graham said at the same hearing.
Can we now expect them and their Republican colleagues to hurl the same outrage at the CEOs of Smith & Wesson, Ruger, SIG SAUER and the rest of the 663 gun manufacturers in the U.S. (according to research firm IBISWorld)?
There were 48,830 gun deaths in the U.S. in 2021, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Of these, 26,328 were firearm suicides; suicides from other causes totaled 21,855. For comparison, there were 42,939 traffic deaths in 2021, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
But don’t hold your breath.
