Re: “Zebras, camels and flames, oh my! Circus animals rescued after truck catches fire on Indiana highway” [Jan. 27, Nation]:
It’s sad and frustrating that in the 21st century, some charities like the Mizpah Shrine Circus in Indiana continue to rely on raising funds off the backs of circus animals. The article shows how precarious circus animals’ lives can be. While I’m thankful that no animals were hurt in that incident, the next time they may not be as lucky. Circus animals are forced to travel from town to town in trucks and railcars that allow them little chance for exercise or anything else that would even begin to replicate their lives in the wild. It is especially difficult for the large, exotic animals. And what kind of lives do they lead when not on the road? Many are chained for long periods of time and forcibly trained to perform unnatural tricks.
I would encourage charities/organizations to look into more modern and humane ways to fundraise. If they want to continue with the circus theme, human-only circuses whose performers voluntarily choose the circus life put on extravagant and entertaining shows — no cruelty or animal abuse involved.
