Christoph Baumgartner set a record for the fastest goal ever scored in international football by scoring after six seconds as Austria beat Slovakia in Bratislava.
The 24-year-old midfielder overcame three challenges from the kick-off and fired a low shot past home goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.
His effort was the second fastest since Lukas Podolski’s strike for Germany against Ecuador in 2013.
Andreas Weimann’s late goal sealed the victory for Ralf Rangnick’s side.
Baumgartner’s remarkable effort almost equalized on Saturday evening when Florian Wirtz put Germany ahead in France with a 25-yard effort that took a deflection off Dayot Upamecano before clipping the underside of the crossbar on its way Gave.
Meanwhile, Austria, who host Turkey in Vienna on Tuesday, have now won four consecutive matches as they prepare for this summer’s Euros in Germany.
And they could hardly have got a better start in the Slovakian capital, as RB Leipzig’s Baumgartner came out to celebrate with his team-mates as the home fans looked on in complete disbelief.
His goal was two seconds faster than David Gualtieri’s goal for San Marino in a World Cup qualifier in 1993 after eight seconds and Christian Benteke’s goal for Belgium against Gibraltar in 2017.
The earliest goal recorded in the Premier League was scored in 7.69 seconds by Shane Long for Southampton in their meeting with Watford in 2019.
Roy Makaay has achieved that distinction in the Champions League, finding the net in 10.12 seconds for Bayern Munich in the second leg of their last-16 tie against Real Madrid in March.
Meanwhile, in February, Croydon FC’s Ryan Hall Scored a wonderful goal straight from the kick-off A time of 2.31 seconds was set by the non-league team in their game against Cockfosters in the London Senior Trophy.
However, Guinness World Records could not confirm that this was the official record for the fastest goal scored from a kick-off because they do not track goals outside of professional football.
