Please take note of an important but unmentioned point with respect to columnist Naomi Ishisaka’s assertion that there are “ways to substantively address … inequality — such as progressive revenue like income taxes …”
While there are various ways to quantify homelessness, Oregon, California and Hawaii typically can be found at the top of these lists (“The 2023 Annual Homelessness Assessment Report to Congress” by the Office of Community Planning and Development of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development).
It is important to realize that all of these states have an income tax. Apparently, that is not the panacea to address homelessness that everyone would wish for.
