Re: “An Oregon town’s homeless crisis goes before high court” [April 21, A1] and “Eviction threats may mount as unpaid rent balances soar” [April 22, A1]:
Hundreds of homeless people in Grant’s Pass, Ore., are at risk for fines and arrest for … being homeless.
About 23% of tenants of Seattle Housing Authority are currently overdue on their rent. And if this isn’t a harbinger, then the fact that multiple nonprofit housing providers in the area say they can no longer maintain the facilities they now operate should signal an impending homelessness crisis in both our urban and rural communities.
What is the solution our national legislature is suggesting to address this critical situation? They just passed a bill to supply foreign/military aid for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan that will cost the taxpayers $95 billion.
See the connection? I didn’t either at first. But now I understand that a majority of the money will go to arms manufacturers here in the United States to replenish our stocks of weapons. So if Boeing, McDonnell Douglas, General Dynamics, et al., hire lots of folks to work in their munitions factories, maybe they can pay off their delinquent rent and get their lives back on track. Ha!
C’mon, Congress. How about spending some money on American citizens? They’re hurting!
