The King County voters in Burien are now finding out that how you vote really does matter. In 2020, the King County sheriff was changed from an independently elected position and now is appointed by King County Executive Dow Constantine.
I think we can all agree that King County’s record on alleviating homelessness has been a miserable failure up to this point. Burien, after having horrible crime and sanitation problems involving homeless encampments, is at least making an effort to clean up the city. [“It’s time to prioritize public safety, not politics, around homelessness,” Opinion, April 3]
Now King County, in concert with a politicized Sheriff’s Office, is suing to block Burien’s efforts, based on what? Their failed record managing homelessness? Ironically this is all happening while Burien is still paying the Sheriff’s Office to enforce the city’s policies.
