I am dismayed that election coverage on many news media outlets of all types is simply reporting the usual “who’s ahead, who’s behind, who’s gone” in local and national elections. Yes, outcomes are the point, but the journey to get there (fair, unfair, purged voters, AI deepfakes, lies and truth) matters so very much. It’s not just who wins, it’s how the “game” is played. Money in politics is buying politicians and policy outcomes these days, and it’s a recipe for disaster for the planet, people and all living beings. Tearing down your political opponents but offering no possible remedies is not satisfactory. Running out of time to correct course, the news media matters incredibly much now.
What I would like to see in 2024, starting now, is investigative journalism and reporting that expresses the policies candidates and parties are promoting, who funds them and whether their methods are ethical and truthful. Words really matter, and government policies matter so much to our daily lives, but will we get the information we need from the news media? Or will propaganda, lies and sins of omission in lazy coverage enable those who could send the country on a downhill trajectory?
