I find ironic the juxtaposition between Danny Westneat’s March 31 column about the supposed waning of progressivism in West Coast cities like San Francisco and Seattle [“The ‘move to the right’ isn’t done yet in West Coast Cities”] and the article in the same issue about Seattle Public Schools dropping the highly capable program in the interest of furthering “equity.” [“Seattle to close its highly capable schools, blend the students.”]
SPS’ deplorable decision is a prime example of the type of well-meaning DEI initiatives drawing the derision and ridicule of people all over the country, of all political persuasions. I should say that Seattle’s well-deserved liberal/political label is quite intact, at least on the DEI front. And in this case in particular, for a lamentable reason.
