Re: “We can feel two different ways at once regarding Israel-Hamas war” [Feb. 3, Opinion]:
Anyone who wants a cease-fire should do everything they can to advocate for one. Change doesn’t happen on an island. Our definitions of liberation need not be the same for us to advocate for a common cause. If Tracy Brazg, like the anti-Zionists she feels at odds with, wants to end the indiscriminate Israel Defense Forces killing of Palestinians funded by U.S. tax dollars, then it’s worth becoming comfortable acting alongside people with whom she might not completely agree. She can join the broad coalition taking to the streets, calling Sen. Patty Murray, speaking out against organizations like the American Israel Public Affairs Committee that buy our representatives’ silence.
I’d also invite Brazg to examine how her advocacy against military occupation of Palestinians in the West Bank, the siege on Gaza and discrimination toward Palestinian citizens of Israel directly contradicts the material reality of Zionism. Because the truth is, Israel’s siege on Gaza is today’s Zionism in action. I’d encourage Brazg to ask herself how her own Zionism could be preventing her from acting on her progressive values. In doing so, I hope she can find the meaningful solidarity she seeks.
With hope for a better future from an anti-Zionist Jew.
