As a product of two families of Nebraska farmers, I can undestand the concern that raising beef is becoming more part of the focus of concern about climate. [“Why one of Colorado’s senators wants to know what makes cattle burp,” Nation & World, April 1] But the fact is, cattle are a major contributor of greenhouse gases, full stop. People need to eat less meat, also full stop.
The idea of doing studies to feed the animals various diets is intriguing, but ultimately more an effort in theory than actual practice. It would take years to come up with a diet that would actually make any difference, and we must consider that there is a limit to how much science can alter the nutritional needs of an animal.
I applaud the effort of the Colorado senator, but some much more realistic economic vision is needed.
