Since joining the Red Sox in March 2022, shortstop Trevor Story has had a disastrous tenure with Boston.
After playing at least 142 games with the Colorado Rockies in four seasons from 2017-21 (excluding the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign), Story was limited to 94 contests with Boston in 2022 and a career-low 43 last year due to a right UCL injury.
The two-time All-Star was looking to put his recent injury problems behind him in 2024, but he suffered a dislocated left shoulder on Friday against the Los Angeles Angels while attempting to dive for a ground ball. Story was placed on the 10-day injured list on Saturday.
Following ominous comments from Red Sox manager Alex Cora on Tuesday about the status of his elbow, chief baseball officer Craig Breslow told reporters that Story will have surgery to repair a fractured glenoid. Story’s timetable to return is six months, so he will miss roughly the rest of the regular season.
