It’s fascinating that Danny Westneat frames less punitive public policies as “ideological experimentation,” while identifying more punitive policies as nuts-and-bolts “stuff that works.” [“The ‘move to the right’ isn’t done yet in West Coast cities,” Northwest, March 31]
In reality, of course, the opposite is true: Less punitive polices regarding drug use, homelessness and other social problems are supported by decades of thoughtful empirical research, while measures such as mandatory drug treatment and encampment sweeps have proven to be both harmful and ineffective. Politicians and voters in Seattle and San Francisco aren’t turning away from ideology, they’re embracing it — facts and evidence be damned.
