Re: “Seattle Mayor Harrell pushes conversions of empty offices to housing” [March 14, Local News]:
Mayor Bruce Harrell is supporting an idea that could change life in the city of Seattle. Conversion of office space to living space would be key in reviving the city and making it safer.
The key is to cut costs by using the office space basically as it is. Don’t fight the design! That’s where it gets expensive. A “group living” setup would provide lower-cost rental units.
This would involve shared bathrooms, leaving bathrooms in the position where they are and adding showers adjacent to that area. Large office areas could then be divided by having regular walls and hallways installed.
In the interest of keeping costs down and keeping the project efficient, there would be community kitchen space, washer/dryer space and possibly a large “home office” space for business use.
To keep common areas neat, the rental pricing would include paying a 24-hour staff for the cleaning of shared areas. This could also apply toward paying security personnel.
How about some sort of contest where architects could be rewarded for designs?
