Former Cy Young Award winner Corbin Burnes was the Orioles’ biggest offseason addition, but he had nothing on Angels’ three-time MVP Mike Trout in the first game of the MLB season.
Trout hit a 402-foot home run, the first of the 2024 campaign, to give the Angels an early 1-0 lead over the Orioles.
Burnes struck out third baseman Anthony Rendon and right fielder Aaron Hicks to begin the game before Trout’s shot to left-center field.
Per Stathead, Trout’s home run is his fourth on Opening Day in his illustrious career. The Angels stalwart’s last Opening Day home run came on April 3, 2017, against the A’s. He also had Opening Day blasts in back-to-back seasons (2014-15) against the Mariners.
The Angels are 0-3 all-time when Trout homers in the first game of the season and will try to break that streak on Thursday.
It won’t be easy. The Orioles have put up five runs through two innings thus far against Angels starting pitcher Pablo Sandoval.
The Orioles traded prospects Joey Ortiz, D.L. Hall and a 2024 second-round pick to the Brewers for Burnes in February.
