Regarding: [“RBG award ceremony canceled after fallout over honorees,” Nation & World March 20] and [“Scott doubles planned gifts to nonprofits with $640M donation,” Nation & World, March 20]. It has been only four years since Ruth Bader Ginsberg passed away and five since she helped establish an award in her name intended for “women who exemplify human qualities of empathy and humility.”
Among this year’s recipients were Elon Musk, Rupert Murdoch and Michael Milken — presumably for their “empathy and humility”?
If this were April 1, I might suspect a prank, but this appears to be no joke. I propose that if MacKenzie Scott were awarded the Ruth Bader Ginsberg Woman of Leadership Award, there would be no need to change the original award name. Her consistent and under-the-radar philanthropy exemplifies the human qualities of both empathy and humility. I think this might be more what Ruth Bader Ginsberg had in mind, and here’s the clincher: Scott is also a woman.
