Perhaps allowing work permits more quickly for those who have applied for asylum would provide some relief. Currently, folks have to wait 150 days from the time they apply for asylum to even apply for a work permit, and it can take many months after that for the permit to be granted. Meanwhile, I see help wanted signs in the windows of almost every small business in my neighborhood — especially neighborhood restaurants.
Clearly, these are resourceful capable people to have made it this far. It seems counterproductive to deny them the chance to support themselves as they await a decision on their asylum request.
