Re: “Don’t let efforts to regulate high-potency pot go up in smoke” [Jan. 24, Opinion]:
I own a cannabis processing company, and clearly potency of cannabis is so high that it is hurting people. This isn’t what anyone wanted when we voted to legalize cannabis.
The idea that the industry can police itself on this issue is ridiculous. We need legislation to solve this.
Legal cannabis is better for Washington state than illegal cannabis. Legal cannabis is tested for potency and safety by state licensed facilities. There can be no assurance of safety with illegal cannabis.
How much THC is too much? This is not an easy question. The best solution is to create a tax structure based on potency level. The lowest tier potency (0-20%) would be taxed at the current rate of about 30%. The next tier (20%-50%) would be taxed at 75% and the last tier (greater than 50%) would be taxed at 200%.
A tax based on potency might be the best solution to deal with the public-health concerns. I also believe this is in the best interest of those of us in the industry. If the potency issue isn’t resolved there will never be serious conversations about legalizing cannabis on a federal level.
