Sweden midfielder Christopher Olsson has been put on a ventilator in hospital after fainting at home.
Midtjylland said the 28-year-old former Arsenal player “appears to be suffering from a serious brain-related illness”.
The Danish club announced that he was taken to Aarhus University Hospital on 20 February.
Midtjylland said they felt “compelled” to issue an update due to “increasing rumors and speculation regarding Christopher Olson’s recent absence”.
“Everyone at FC Midtjylland is deeply affected by Christopher’s sudden illness,” the club said in a statement on Tuesday.
“Christopher Olson is suffering from a serious brain-related illness, which is neither caused by any self-inflicted damage nor caused by external factors.
“A team of leading Danish medical experts is currently working under pressure to make a diagnosis and begin the correct treatment.”
Olsson came through Arsenal’s youth academy and made one appearance for the Gunners before permanently joining Midtjylland midway through the 2014–15 Premier League season.
Arsenal said on X, formerly known as Twitter: “Get well soon, Christopher. We wish you a full and speedy recovery.”
Olsson, who has made 47 senior appearances for Sweden, has had spells at Swedish side AIK, Krasnodar in Russia and Anderlecht in Belgium between two stints with Midtjylland.
“Keep fighting Kofe!” The Swedish Football Association said on X, formerly known as Twitter. “The entire Swedish football family is thinking of you and hope you recover soon. Our thoughts also go out to Christopher’s loved ones at this difficult time.”
Olsson has missed Midtjylland’s two most recent Danish Superliga matches and last played for the club on 9 February against Fredrikstad in the Atlantic Cup.
“Since being recruited, Christopher has been surrounded by his family and members of the FC Midtjylland staff, as well as experts in the field,” the club said.
“FC Midtjylland urges the public to show respect and understanding so that Christopher, his family and the doctors can have peace of mind to ensure that Christopher gets better and recovers as successfully as possible.”
