Re: “WA’s snowpack languishes with little hope for the months ahead” [Feb. 6, Climate Lab]:
The lack of snowpack is extremely distressing, but it is vital that citizens are educated about it and the impacts it will have on our local ecosystems and communities. Reading this made my throat tight with anxiety and my heart heavy with dread, thinking of the past several years of drought and more to come, and our rivers and streams and all living things that depend on them — including us.
I am a river swimmer and a Streamkeeper (steward of watersheds). Our streams and rivers are severely threatened by the absence of a healthy, sustained snowpack, and when our water is at risk, we are in danger. Rivers are vital to our collective well-being and way of life. We depend on rivers, and rivers require healthy forests.
We must prioritize the restoration and conservation of healthy forests to combat climate change. Healthy forests result in healthier watersheds and communities. Along with my Citizens Climate Lobby peers, I implore U.S. Sens. Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell and U.S. Rep. Rick Larsen to do absolutely everything in their power to restore our forests and protect our watersheds — and to do so immediately, as if our lives depend on it, because they do.
