Re: “Puget Sound Energy cancels liquid natural gas plant expansion in Tacoma” [Jan. 24, Local News]:
Thank you, Puget Sound Energy! We in Western Washington can breathe easier now that methane development in Tacoma has stopped. The Puyallup Tribe has won its fight against the expansion of PSE’s liquefied natural gas terminal on the Tacoma waterway. The tribe and many others concerned about toxic methane from LNG facilities had expressed vocal opposition since 2019 about the Tacoma waterfront development.
Methane is called “natural” gas, an oxymoron given that it is a potent greenhouse gas harmful to human health and to the atmosphere. There’s research showing that people in this country generally misunderstand that LNG is much less harmful than gas or oil. However, it spews toxic methane into the atmosphere during its production, pipeline transport and use in home appliances.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Energy has paused its approvals for a huge LNG export complex on the Gulf Coast, responding to citizen and scientific opposition. Let’s make sure President Joe Biden knows that there’s no place for LNG in our future.
Let’s breathe a sigh of relief — and of cleaner air.
