Thank you for the good perspective in the article, and the heads-up about Tuesday’s Nordic Heritage Museum workshop on this concept.
I write to point out that one action health psychologist Kari Leibowitz suggests — bonfires — is a really bad idea in the city or suburbs. Wood smoke, even in small amounts, is carcinogenic and often a terrible respiratory irritant to many, including this healthy and active outdoors practitioner of “friluftsliv.”
One neighbor’s cozy outdoor fire is another’s requirement to go indoors so they can try to breathe freely (provided their house is sealed tightly enough that the smoke doesn’t infiltrate).
For densely populated areas such as ours, it is much better to promote the idea of gas (natural or propane) fire pits. That way everyone can practice and enjoy the open-air life.
