The denizens of MAGA world seem to have truly lost their minds over the possibility that global pop star Taylor Swift might endorse President Joe Biden, as she did in the 2020 presidential election.
Ludicrous conspiracy theories connecting Swift, Biden and the Super Bowl are swirling through right-wing social media and are being amplified on conservative TV and radio outlets. The gist is that the Deep State rigged the NFL season so that the Kansas City Chiefs would be in the championship game, thereby giving Swift the opportunity be on hand to root for her boyfriend, Chiefs’ tight end Travis Kelce. This burst of publicity from the nation’s biggest sporting event, so the line of thinking goes, would so greatly enhance Swift’s celebrity that her endorsement of Biden would be incredibly potent.
It is truly hard to imagine that Swift’s celebrity could be made any more huge than it already is — her concert tour has already raked in more than $1 billion and given a boost to the national economy — but people afflicted with MAGA minds have no trouble imagining all manner of wild absurdities.
Reportedly, folks in the Trump campaign are freaked out about Swift’s likely support of Biden and have vowed to conduct a “holy war” against the performer. Former President Donald Trump, himself, is said to be ranting about Swift, asserting that he is much more popular with the American people than she is. Actually, a poll last October found that 6 in 10 people consider themselves to be at least casual Swift fans, while Trump has fallen short of 50% of the popular vote in his two runs for president.
Trump’s supporters are an intensely loyal horde, notable for their willingness to believe any scenario, most notably the bogus claim that the 2020 election was stolen from their dear leader. But Swift’s fans may be just as fervent and formidable. In an interview with Politico, University of Kansas Professor Brian Donovan, who teaches a course called “The Sociology of Taylor Swift,” cautions against messing with the megastar.
“The Swiftie fan is arguably the most immersive and intense fandom in the U.S. right now,” Donovan said. “And to anger them is just political folly.”
Trump should probably heed that warning. He has a real chance to beat Biden, but, if he tries running against Swift, he’ll be blown away.
