While much of the talk ahead of (and after) the NBA trade deadline involved LeBron James’ future with the Los Angeles Lakers, things have quieted on that front for the most part. It seems likely that James will remain with the Lakers after this season, even with his contract still in limbo. But the Golden State Warriors, who did show interest in the 39-year-old star following his cryptic social media posts and evident frustration, have apparently not closed the door on a potential Stephen Curry-LeBron pairing.
There are reportedly four potential scenarios specifically that could lead to the Warriors potentially taking a swing for the fences this offseason. According to The Athletic’s Sam Amick, Anthony Slater and Jovan Buha, the Lakers’ lack of interest in trading James doesn’t mean a potential deal “won’t be revisited in the summer.” The front office is reportedly also ready to explore a few other ideas if they’re possible, including teaming Curry up with Giannis Antetokounmpo, Paul George or even possibly Kevin Durant in a reunion.
The Warriors’ lead decision-makers still believe Curry’s longevity gives them a couple more seasons of possible contention, if the roster around him is up to it. If there’s a path to LeBron, Giannis Antetokounmpo (their dream scenario), impending free agent Paul George or a reunion with Kevin Durant, they will explore it.
While it’s obviously a long shot that Antetokounpo or Durant surface as options, as the former signed a three-year contract extension this summer through the 2027-28 season, and the latter is under contract with the Phoenix Suns through 2025-26, the two other options still loom (for now).
Both James and George have player options for the 2024-25 season. While it’s widely believed they’ll remain with their respective teams in Los Angeles, it’d be quite the ride to see either or both hypothetically receive a free-agency pitch from the Warriors and Curry. It’s all just fun and speculation at this point, of course, but there has to be plenty of appeal to the idea of playing alongside Curry.
