Re: “They started building a bulkhead for a new home on Hood Canal. Then the feds found out” [Feb. 12, Climate Lab]:
The Black Hills Audubon Society applauds Lynda Mapes’ reporting on the illegal construction of a concrete bulkhead along the Hood Canal. This incident is a reminder of the critical importance of preserving natural shorelines for the benefit of all Washingtonians and the wildlife that depends on healthy marine habitats.
Shorelines play a vital role in supporting a thriving food web in the Puget Sound. They provide nursery grounds for forage fish, and feeding grounds for birds, salmon and orca. Natural shorelines are a key component of healthy marine ecosystems and help ensure the resilience of coastal communities in a changing climate.
It is disheartening to see new bulkheads installed along our shorelines, especially as we are making significant investments in Puget Sound recovery. Shoreline development like this illegal bulkhead undermines these efforts.
Fortunately, resources are available to shoreline landowners to make better construction decisions. The Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Shore Friendly program offers stewardship incentives to help landowners and communities implement ecologically sound shoreline management practices.
By choosing to protect and restore natural shorelines, landowners can beautify their properties while contributing to the recovery of birds, fish and orcas in our region.
