Re: “Randall G. Chiarelli, longtime PNB lighting designer, dies at 74” [Jan. 26, Local News]:
The obituary for Randall Chiarelli, Pacific Northwest Ballet lighting designer, was a breath of fresh air. Chiarelli created a wonderful visual atmosphere to support live performance onstage, time after time. His art is best appreciated in live performances, as his use of three dimensions cannot be fully appreciated on a two- dimensional screen. And, because of the magic of light, the fourth dimension of time is constantly added.
To take the angle, color and movement of light, and support and enhance what is happening on stage is an amazing thing. To be able to take that imagination and collaboration and put it into a revivable record of past designs is a gift. But it takes the eyes of the lighting designer to make sure the design is still right.
It is good to see a tribute to such a gifted artist. Too often lighting designers are not mentioned in stage reviews, unless the “effects” are flashy.
